There is a mindset that is needed to achieve any goal. It all starts with “wanting”. How you want, however, will make all the difference in, how and when, you will achieve your goals.
I have worked with many clients that set goals to lose weight, get a promotion, get married, start a new career, or reboot their life to something more enjoyable. From my experience, there is one mindset that must be in place first for anyone to have a realistic chance of reaching their goals. That one mindset is, how you are using the word “want”.
The key to getting what you want is to focus on what you do want, and not what you don’t want.
If you start a diet and your mindset is focused on:
I don’t want to be hungry
I don’t want to stop eating my favorite foods
I don’t want to exercise
I don’t want to miss out when everyone else is celebrating
I don’t want to stop having wine with dinner
I don’t want to give up cream in my coffee
I don’t want to write in my food journal
I don’t want to worry about what I’m eating
I don’t want to give up soda…
You get the point. Our subconscious minds act upon on what we focus on, so if this is how you’re thinking you actually will get what you “don’t want”. When you focus on what you don’t want, those thoughts interfere with the thoughts you have about the success you do want.
The way to achieve your goals is to focus on the things you do want:
I want to be happy with the way I look
I want to fit into my skinny jeans
I want to feel good in my clothes
I want to sleep better at night
I want to go shopping and get a new wardrobe
I want to feel confident when I’m presenting in front of everyone
I want to have energy to play with my children
Doesn’t this sound better?
If you have been having difficulty with sticking to a plan or haven’t been as successful as you thought you would be, think about your mindset. Change from thinking about what you don’t want to happen on the way to achieving your goal, and start thinking about what you do “want” to happen when you achieve your goal. I have seen this work over and over again with my clients, and it will work for you.
Two steps to help you get what you WANT:
1. Sometime today and write down what you WANT
2. Every time you start saying or thinking about what you don’t WANT, change the wording to be stated in terms of what you do WANT instead. When you change your beliefs and your pattern of thinking, you change the outcome.
Outcome – know what you want and be in the proper mental and physical state you achieve it.
Acuity (observe) – say alert and keep your senses open and notice what you are getting. Is it linked to negative thinking?
Flexibility – keep changing what you are thinking and doing until you reach your goals.
